How To Avoid The Most Common Injuries

August 27, 2024

At our The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center physical therapy practice, we’re proud to have successfully guided people of varying ages to recover from conditions resulting from accidents, disabilities, medical conditions, and work- or age-related wear-and-tear, to name a few. Here are a few tips on how to prevent some of the most common conditions that bring people into PT.

Topping the list are sprains (usually caused by twisting or wrenching a ligament at the knee, shoulder, ankle or wrist) and strains (caused by overuse or sudden movements involving the muscles or tendons). To prevent these injuries, engage in a dynamic stretching routine to warm up the muscles, make sure you’re using the proper form, and gradually increase the difficulty or intensity of the exercise.

Right up there at the top is back pain, often the result of poor posture, muscle weakness, and stress. It’s wise to perform exercises that strengthen your core muscles; make sure to bend your knees, not your waist, when lifting heavy objects; and maintain proper posture by sitting and standing with your back straight and shoulders relaxed.

Knee pain caused by patellar tendinitis or injuries such as tears to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscus are quite common. It’s imperative that your footwear provides adequate support and shock absorption for your activity; that you focus on exercises targeting the quadriceps, hamstring and calf muscles; and stretch before engaging in activity to increase flexibility.

Common shoulder injuries like rotator cuff tears and impingements can be avoided by performing exercises targeting the muscles in the rotator cuff; maintaining proper posture when using the arms for lifting and carrying; and being especially cautious when engaged in activities involving repetitive overhead movements.

To avoid or recover from one of these conditions, why not trust a professional with years of training and experience to ensure your exercise program is tailored to your specific needs? Please contact The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center today to schedule a consultation.
