A Physical Therapist Eases Life For People With MS

August 27, 2024

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling disease of the brain and spinal central nervous system. Though the symptoms of this lifelong condition can be mild, MS usually causes muscle weakness, balance issues, fatigue and coordination problems.

The office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center has extensive knowledge and training in physical therapy techniques, anatomy, physiology and rehabilitation practices. We genuinely care about our patients’ well-being and work to understand their individual needs and concerns.

Here’s how a PT helps people with multiple sclerosis.

Improves mobility and flexibility: A PT designs specific exercise routines to help maintain and improve muscle strength, flexibility and overall mobility. Regular stretching helps reduce muscle stiffness and spasticity.

Enhances balance and coordination: He (or she) has patients work on exercises that enhance balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls. Gait training involves exercises and techniques to improve walking patterns and stability.

Manages fatigue: A PT teaches strategies to manage and conserve energy throughout the day. He helps patients learn to pace themselves so they can balance activity with respites to reduce low energy.

Strengthens muscles: Tailored resistance exercises help build muscle strength and endurance. Functional training focuses on exercises that improve how patients perform daily activities.

Helps manage pain: His massage and joint mobilization help reduce pain and discomfort. Heat, cold and electrical stimulation control pain and improve function.

Improves cardiovascular health: He teaches walking, swimming and cycling to enhance overall heart and lung function.

Demonstrates assistive devices: A PT recommends and trains patients to properly use canes, walkers or orthotics to aid mobility.

Education and empowerment: A PT teaches patients about their condition and how to manage symptoms effectively. He provides exercises to be done at home to maintain progress between therapy sessions.

Improves bladder and bowel control: He describes strengthening exercises that improve the pelvic floor muscles.

The office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center communicates with our patients by thoroughly explaining their treatment plans, exercises and progress clearly and understandably. Please call us today for an appointment.
