Adapting to a Leg Prosthetic: Physical Therapy Makes a Huge Difference

November 28, 2024

Physical therapy is imperative in helping people who have lost all or part of a leg adapt to prosthetic devices so they can regain mobility, function and confidence. The journey toward using a prosthetic can be physically and emotionally challenging. A physical therapist (PT) guides patients through this adjustment process.

Everyone at the office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center is results-oriented. We focus on achieving positive outcomes for our patients, setting realistic goals and adapting treatment plans as necessary to optimize their recovery.

Physical therapy starts by strengthening the muscles around the residual limb and maintaining flexibility. This groundwork helps prevent muscle contractures and ensures that the residual limb is in its best condition to bear the weight and pressure of the prosthetic device. A PT also addresses issues such as pain management and skin care to reduce discomfort and prevent complications.

After the prosthetic is fitted, the PT guides patients through various exercises that help them acquire strength, balance and coordination. These movements build the muscle memory required to operate the prosthetic device efficiently. For example, patients with a new prosthetic foot would practice walking, climbing stairs and balancing on different surfaces to ensure they can manage a variety of terrains and daily activities.

A PT also addresses posture and gait correction. Walking with a prosthetic limb can feel unnatural at first, and improper gait can lead to pain and injuries. A PT provides feedback and adjustments to help patients develop a more natural and comfortable walking pattern. He (or she) may also incorporate balance training and core strengthening exercises to improve overall stability and reduce the risk of falls. Learning to use a new limb can be discouraging, and many patients get frustrated, anxious or self-conscious during the process. A PT builds patients’ confidence by offering support, encouragement and education.

Whatever our patients’ physical therapy needs, The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center tailors treatment plans to meet the unique needs and goals of each patient. We recognize that no two individuals are alike. Please call us today for an appointment.
