Manage Your Back Pain While Getting Physical Therapy

February 3, 2025

About 16 million Americans suffer from persistent or chronic back pain. Many people go for treatment from a physical therapist, who can improve or restore their functionality

At the office of The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, patients step into a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. We ensure that your visit will be pleasant from the moment you walk in. We enjoy getting to know our patients and establishing positive relationships with them.

Physical therapists teach patients how to sit, stand and move in ways that keep their spine in proper alignment and alleviate strain on their back. For some people, though, the liberation doesn’t happen overnight. If you’re one of them, here’s how to lessen your back strain while undergoing your course of treatment.

Relieving back pain requires a multi-faceted approach. Start by adjusting your sleeping position and ensuring your mattress is comfortably firm. A poor sleep posture can worsen back pain, so try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees to maintain spinal alignment. If you prefer sleeping on your back, place a pillow under your knees.

Next, pay attention to your posture. Slouching can exacerbate back pain, especially during prolonged sitting. Sit upright with your shoulders relaxed and use a pillow or rolled towel to support your lower back. Keep your feet flat on the floor.

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as NSAIDs or acetaminophen, can help reduce pain. However, consult your doctor before taking them, as some individuals may have contraindications.

Avoid prolonged bed rest; it can worsen back pain. Instead, gradually resume movement and incorporate light exercise into your routine. Swimming, walking or yoga can effectively relieve pain and promote healing.

For acute pain, apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day. After a few days, switch to heat therapy with a heating pad or warm bath to relax muscles and improve circulation. To prevent burns or tissue damage, never sleep on a heating pad.

Choose The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Center as your physical therapist to experience the difference in personalized, high-quality care that prioritizes your well-being. Your health is our priority, and we look forward to being your trusted partner. Please don’t hesitate to call us for an appointment today.
